Well, hell, and a damn big “Shame on me!” I feel just sick about what I’ve done. Truthfully? I don’t even know how I got caught up in all this.
I’ve been actively taking part in the extremely vocal portion of the American population who feel that Rush Limbaugh simply went beyond the pale, the point of no return, beyond what can be tolerated in his description of Miss Fluke as a prostitute and slut.
And man, I mean actively:
- signing anything I could find on it
- writing about it
- sending emails
- bribing tiny children to masquerade as adults and solicit signatures from their neighbors to take his show off the air
Okay, no. Not that last one. But geez!
I’ve been an aggressor against the poor man, fer God’s sake. And now, heaven help me, I too have
Gone. Too. Far.
A lot like Rush did, actually.
Here’s why:
Just an hour ago I felt a huge swell of compassion for poor Rush when I read a post today from an ABC blogger who quoted a still-committed Limbaugh sponsor, despite all that’s happened. The sponsor wisely stated:
The right to free speech should never be subjected to boycott.
Bravo! Man the torpedoes, full speed ahead! AMERICA LIVES ON!!!!!!!!!!!!! And protect our God-given right to say what we wish.
Onward, Limbaugh,
Onward, Limbaugh,
Fight on for your bucks…
THOSE DAMN BOYCOTTING HATE-MONGERS SHOULD BE KICKED OUT OF THE COUNTRY! Thank God I’ve seen the light. So I called it a night. Except I had to check the net a couple more times from bed. I read that:
Wikipedia sez:
A boycott is an act of voluntarily abstaining from using, buying, or dealing with a person, organization, or country as an expression of protest, usually for political reasons. It can be a form of consumer activism.
Wait, though. Wait, what?
Protest?
Expression?
Activism?
Never mind.
Oh, Rosanne Rosannadanna, you are missed!

Absolutely I agree. Actually, my post was extremely tongue-in-cheek. I am still doing everything I can to stop Limbaugh’s unbelievable power over the Republican party. It’s insane that no presidential candidate has had the courage to say, “Whoa. He really made a big mistake here. TOO big.” Thanks for coming by.

Haters are all around. Boycotting is a method of them, they use it as their expression. And that’s a shame.

Julie, I’m afraid I didn’t make myself clear. My fault! I must not have written it well. I am FOR the boycotters, and am in fact one of them. Good luck with your website that promotes dental health. It’s a great way to reach out and help. I mean that.

Free speech does not, to my knowledge, include the right to slander innocent people. But even so, for me it is not a legal but a moral and ethical issue. It is about being decent and respectful. We have to draw a line somewhere and his actions are reprehensible. I support the boycotting of his show.
If he wants to use a public platform to spew slanderous comments at a young woman with no platform to defend herself or opportunity to respond, then he can get on a box on a street corner. Otherwise, he is charged with a greater responsibility for his use of his position….in my opinion.
I rarely comment on anything political but this is one time I could not remain silent. You did a great job outlining the complexities…and to me, it’s simple…bravo for you for saying no to unprofessional, hateful, hurtful, disrespectful and untrue things.

A thought-provoking post, Paula!
True, Rush has a right to free speech.
So do his critics, for demanding that Rush be accountable for his words.
And so do his advertisers, who realize Limbaugh’s words don’t reflect well on them.
One area where I don’t agree on free speech is bullying. Rush Limbaugh is in effect a bully, as the act of bullying involves a power imbalance. If he attacked Stephen Colbert, for example, it would be peer-to-peer conflict. But to attack a private citizen — well, there’s no way she could match his power.
We all have free speech. But with free speech comes responsibilities. Just because we can say it doesn’t mean we should say it.
Looking forward to reading more! Susan

Susan, my friend! I couldn’t agree more! Just as boycotting is a truly powerful way of exercising free speech.
I’m so embarrassed that I didn’t make that clear. I went back to edit to make it a little more obvious that I was making FUN of Rush…No idea if it works!
It’s allllways somethin’…DARN! Once again Gilda Radner and Roseanne Rosannadanna enter my lexicon! ;D

Thanks, Tambre, AS always. I’m a bit worried since some comments and emails seem to think I meant it about changing my mind and feeling for Rush. I must have really blown it on this one. Ahh, life online. And so it goes.
