O Canada! Horrifying Infographic on the Slaughter of Baby Seals

baby seal will soon be killed by fishermen in canada who sell their skins

This is an very sad story for what some consider a “beautiful” reason: FREAKIN’ FASHION. Fancy shmancy sealskin coats. Good God, can there be a more stupid reason to treat these adorable baby animals so inhumanely?

Wait until you see how they kill the seals and why. My stomach turned inside out when I read it.

Prepare yourself. This is an ugly, ugly scene that Canada doesn’t appear to mind at all. Many, many countries have banned it. You’ll see the map. But not Canada. Nope. They don’t want their fishermen upset. Even though it’s just a sliver of their income, and despite the fact that there’s an easy solution.

If after reading it, you agree with me, please share it. The Humane Society of America is fighting tooth and nail to put a stop to this, and it has to happen quickly. Or the slaughter begins again. Share if you can. (If you have bad vision like me, click on the infographic and it will take you to a larger image. I think. You know me. Not so great at this web stuff.

Preaching over. Soapbox taken down. Sorry, but sometimes I just get enraged by the inhumanity of man!

Do you own the copyrights of this infographic? I just want to use it for a presentation in my son’s school, but I don’t know if I am allowed to it. I ask you for your permission.

I grew up in Newfoundland where the seal cull takes place. Let me show you a different side of this story.

    1. Clubbing seals has been found to be the most humane way to kill the seal; and contrary to footage you may see where the animal is repeatedly clubbed, that is not the usual case. Seal hunters know where and how hard to hit the animal so it does not suffer. Although it looks harsh especially when viewing the little face of a baby seal, it’s no more inhumane than the way we slaughter cows, pigs or chickens.
    2. Many of the seal hunters use rifles and do not club.
    3. The seal is not killed for it’s pelt alone; in fact, the pelt is one of the least reasons for a seal hunt. The main reason is for the meat and the oil which many people and certainly all the indigeneous people eat and use.
    3. The seal hunt is also there to retain a way of life led by the population of NL and Labrador and by the indigeneous people of the North. It is part of their heritage, the same as fishing for wild salmon and/or hunting bison.
    4. Because of the decline of seal hunting in NL over the last 40-50 years, the seal population has grown to huge proportions. They are voracious eaters and have been proven to be responsible for the decline of codfish, which was the main source of income for a large portion of the Newfoundland fishing communities. NL is a coastal province, and we were known for our fishing industry and especially the cod. This industry has been all but decimated, and the few cod that remain are found to be mostly riddled with worms which come from the feces of the large seal population in the ocean.
With the closure of the cod fishery and the many fish plants, my once proud province of hard working people now have little industry to employ them. Unemployment is high, some fishing villages have become ghost towns, children must move away to look for work and unfortunately, the climate of this wild, harsh province is not one that can adapt by farming and such.

We are not a province or a country of heartless, cruel killers. The seal population in Northern Canada is huge and can easily accomodate a cull; the seals are in no danger of becoming extinct. And that is not the reason we have a seal hunt; it’s for the economical viability of the entire ecosystem.

Please be open-minded about this situation and try to look at the whole picture for this part of the world. Newfoundlanders are some of the most large-hearted and friendliest people in the world. We just want a chance to feed our families and make some kind of living.

Thank you for allowing me to speak.

I’ve always been shocked by the meanness of the human society. How could we kill these beautiful animals? We don’t need them all for our food, it’s just human cruelty…

This is horrifying. I find it very terrible. How can people be so mean and heartless.
I hope this stops really soon.

This mass slaughter of baby seals in Canada is such a shame to humanity. On my last visit to a sea beach in San Diego, I have seen posters and banners of this kind condemning the mass slaughter. It is very difficult to curb all these practices without Government control. There has to be a strong, comprehensive system in place to help stop this. I’m glad people like you are doing their bit to create awareness about such a horrendous act.

Such a great infographic! But the results and numbers are really horrible… I haven’t known that these cute animals are being hunted in Canada… The government should do something!

Paula you are not telling me something I don’t know but it still makes me sick to my stomach and totally cringingly embarrassed to be human. It is sometimes necessary but I’m glad you didn’t post any graphic images because they only seem to upset people with a soul who would not wear the rubbish end result.
I am at a loss as to what will make this ludicrous behaviour stop.
